ecclesiastes:
catching smoke
Week One: introduction
reflection and discussion questions:
-
As we begin our study of Ecclesiastes, what assumptions, if any, do you have about the book?
-
Ecclesiastes is one of the five wisdom books of the Bible (Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs). Read Proverbs 1:20-23. On Sunday, Phil asked, "If wisdom is crying out...will we listen?" With that in mind, consider the following questions: Why wouldn't we listen? Is it possible that we can't hear the voice of wisdom? What is there in our lives and hearts that drowns out the voice of wisdom?
-
Proverbs 1:23 says, "How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple?" What do you think "simple" means here? And what is the connection between this "simplicity" and wisdom?
-
"The wisdom books are a ‘means of grace’ by which God helps His people live holy and productive lives during this present age of suffering and evil." (Tom Kelby) Or, as Phil said on Sunday of Ecclesiastes specifically, it's wisdom that helps God's people "navigate life as it really is, not as it ought to be." How does this understanding help us in our approach of Ecclesiastes?
-
Take a moment to watch the Bible Project video on Ecclesiastes. With a fuller understanding of hebel, read Ecclesiastes 1:1-2. Why do you think this is such a central thought for the The Preacher?
-
What is the value of this book meeting us right where we are–but not giving us answers?
-
Phil said there are three ways the book of Ecclesiastes will build us up. How do you think Ecclesiastes might build us up in these areas?
-
to fear the Lord (Ecc 3:14)
-
to enjoy the Lord's good gifts (Ecc 2:24; 9:9)
-
to rest in the hope of Jesus (Ecc 12:13-14)
-
-
Practicing Gratitude. Phil mentioned his friend who has a practice of daily remembering and giving thanks for 3 things from the previous day, e.g., a good meal, time with loved ones, God's mercy. How can a practice like this help us to become more aware of the Lord's good gifts and to better enjoy them? Commit to practicing this (or something similar) this week, and ask the Lord to help you enjoy His goodness.
