Week six: ch 2:18-26
reflection and discussion questions:
-
Review: Last week we highlighted Psalm 73:11-28, and we were encouraged to "carry it with you" during the week. How did that go? On Sunday, Phil encouraged us to keep going in our practice of setting aside two minutes a day of quiet reflection on Who God is. How does all this help us here under the sun? Take a moment to share any challenges or praises with this.
-
Take a moment in prayer, welcoming the Spirit's presence. Then read Ecclesiastes 2:18-26. Consider what stands out to you and why?
-
In this passage, the Preacher describes his despair over his toil. What do you think is underneath this feeling for him? When have you perhaps experienced this in your own life?
-
Read again Ecclesiastes 2:24-25. What seems to be the difference between despairing over one's toil, and finding enjoyment in it? How can this impact our everyday life?
-
Read Genesis 2:4-15, and take note of God's good creation. What does this passage tell us about God's original design for things like work and pleasure? How does this relate to Ecclesiastes 2:24-25?
-
We were made to live a life with God and for God, and this life is available in and only in Jesus. (1 John 5:11-12) Phil asked on Sunday, "What does our life center around?" Why is this such a critical question? And what does it look like for one's life to center around Jesus?
-
What are the benefits of this kind of life? Consider the following passages and discuss: Colossians 3:23-25, 1 Timothy 6:6-8, 1 Corinthians 15:58
-
"For apart from Him who can eat or who can have enjoyment?" What are some ways we can practice enjoying the Lord's presence?
