ecclesiastes:
catching smoke
Week eight: ch 3:14-22
reflection and discussion questions:
-
Review: Based upon last week's passage (in particular Ecc 3:12-13), we were encouraged to practice being joyful, doing good, or enjoying God's good gifts. How did that go? Share any encouragements or struggles.
-
Take a moment in prayer, welcoming the Spirit's presence. Then read Ecclesiastes 3:14-22, and point out any words, phrases, or verses that stand out to you.
-
On Sunday, Steve went all the way back to Genesis 1-3 in order to give us a framework for understanding this Ecclesiastes 3 passage. Why do you think he did that? What connection is there between the Genesis passage and Ecclesiastes?
-
Adam and Eve's high calling in the Garden of Eden was to work in it. How does this impact the view of our own day to day work and the high calling it is? Given all the emphasis on the emptiness and futility of work in Ecclesiastes, what can we learn about the Fall of humanity in Genesis 3?
-
Steve divided his talk into three sections: Eternal Perspective (vv. 14-18), Fleeting Permanence (vv. 19-21), and Logical Purpose (v. 22). Discuss how each of these passages reflects the title Steve chose for each.
-
Steve also referred us to 1 Corinthians 15:45-49. Read this passage and discuss how it helps us find meaning in all the hevel (vanity) of life "under the sun."
-
At the end of his message, Steve said there are three kinds of people, and, from time to time, we all move from one of these groups to another. Where do you find yourself these days, and how can we pray for each other given where we currently are?
-
Those for whom this world makes no sense and want more–want life with Jesus.
-
Those who want Jesus, but who have let other things creep in and lead them astray.
-
Those who believe all their days are a gift and who give thanks and praise to God in them.
-
-
Discuss how you can help encourage one another this week. (For example, committing to pray for one another during the week, send an encouraging message, call on the phone, etc.)
