practices in abiding

Week ten: service
reflection and discussion questions:
  1. In Mark 10:41-45 James and John step forward to ask Jesus if they can have the prime seats at Jesus' right and left hand in His Kingdom. How does Jesus answer them, and how does His answer give us glimpse of serving in the Kingdom?

  2. Josh and Rachel said that a servant is something we are over and above something we do. In other words, being a servant is our identity rather than work that we do. How does this challenge your ideas of servanthood?

  3. They also referred to an old message from Mike Przybylski, in which he said: "Our identity as Christ-followers means giving up our rights. You need to see people the way Jesus sees you." How does this change the way you see others and their needs-and your opportunity to serve them?

  4. Read John 13:1-17, and then answer the following questions:

    • What challenges you the most about this passage?

    • Josh said, "God wants to give us what's best, not just what we want." How have you experienced this in your own life?

  5. Josh told us to avoid The Trap that's set up in John 13:15-17. The Trap is holding two apparently contradictory ideas in tension: 1) Works don't save us (Eph. 2:8-9), but 2) Faith without works is dead (James 2:17). Do you see this tension as a Trap? Discuss why or why not.

  6. How might the practice of service teach us humility, both in serving and in being served?

  7. Phil encouraged us to pray for opportunities to serve and talked about what a courageous move it is to even pray such a prayer! Pray that prayer amongst your group now (or on your own)-and if you're not quite ready, pray that God would help you want to pray such a prayer!

Next practice: witness

We'd love to hear from you!
