Practices in Abiding.jpg

practices in abiding

Week three: scripture
reflection and discussion questions:
  1. Read Isaiah 55:1-3. What is God's invitation to the reader in this passage?  What is the promise to the reader if they accept and participate in the invitation?

  2. How does seeing God's words as good, rich, life-giving food impact your approach to the Scriptures? What does it look like to read them in a such a way that it "enters our souls, the way food enters our stomachs, spreads through our blood, and transforms us?" (Eugene Peterson)

  3. What do you think it means to make a "practice" of Scripture?

  4. Mary Brack shared a bit of her story (and passion!) of being in the Scriptures and how it has/continues to shape her life.  She gave a resource of how she practices reading (see pdf below) and also walked us through an example.  How might reading the Scriptures in this way shape your life? Practice this with Psalm 119: 9-16.

  5. Pause and consider how God might be calling you to respond in all this.  What practical steps might He be calling you to?  Take a moment to prayerfully consider these things, and then share with a trusted friend who might be able to help you walk forward.

  6. Read John 15:4-5. Phil's brief story: Phil mentioned how he and his boys often watch baseball together. And recently, one of his sons shared with him that his favorite part of watching baseball was "watching it with you, dad."  Why is it important to remember the reality, that when we "practice Scripture," we are doing it in and with Jesus?  How does this fellowship with His Spirit as we read give context to our reading?
