Practices in Abiding.jpg

practices in abiding

Week four: Generosity
reflection and discussion questions:
  1. The University of Notre Dame defines generosity as "the virtue of giving good things to others freely and abundantly." Read 2 Corinthians 8:9; Philippians 2:1-5.  How do these passages reveal Jesus' generosity? How can practicing generosity help us to abide in Him?

  2. Our God is generous. Read James 1:17; Ephesians 1:3; Romans 8:31-32. Take a moment, and prayerfully consider all the good gifts (both seen and unseen) you have received from your God Who loves you and made you. Feel free to jot them down, and offer a prayer of thanksgiving to the Lord.  In addition, ask Him to reveal what more He might be inviting you to receive from Him.

  3. In Matthew 10:8, we read,“Freely you have received; freely give.”   In response to all that we have received in Jesus, take a moment to prayerfully consider what Jesus might be inviting you to practice giving and to whom.

  4. With Jesus, there is both a call to receive and to give; to have the posture of an open hand.  Which of these (receiving or giving) is more challenging to you?  Why?

  5. On Sunday, Phil mentioned a few practical suggestions in practicing generosity.  From things like setting calendar reminders, to giving in secret, to even praying for the sake of others (including even our enemies!).  What practical steps might the Lord be leading you to in this practice of generosity?  Consider sharing with a trusted friend who might be able to help you walk forward.
