The Sermon on the mount

Week fifteen: Matthew 6:7-15
reflection and discussion questions:
  1. Review:  Last week, we were encouraged to practice giving, prayer, and fasting...and to do so in secret. How did that go? Any areas of struggle or areas of praise?

  2. Take a moment in prayer, welcoming the Spirit's presence. Then read through Matthew 6:7-15 paying attention to any word or phrase that stands out to you.

  3. Before getting into the content of Jesus' prayer, read again and consider His words leading up to it (vv 7-8). Do we struggle with what words to use when we pray, or how MANY words to use when we pray, or wonder what all we need to say? What comfort does it give you to know that you're praying to your Father in Heaven, and that He knows what we need even before you ask?

  4. On Sunday, Jean walked us through each incredible line of Jesus' prayer. Take time to do the same.  Here's some questions to consider:

    1. (V 9) Why is it good for us to remember that our Father's name is to be hallowed? What can happen if we forget?

    2. (V 10) Jean referenced this as perhaps "the most important part of this prayer." Why is this petition so important for us? (Read Mark 14:36).

    3. (V 11) Our Father cares and provides. What cares or needs to you have these days? Where in Jesus do we find all that we need?

    4. (VV 12, 14-15) Jean mentioned that, "forgiveness is the currency of God's Kingdom." Where might you need to receive the amazing forgiveness of God in Jesus? Where might you need to extend it?

    5. (V 13) In other words, "Don't lead us down the candy aisle." Where have you seen the Lord's deliverance before in your life? Why is it important to pray this daily?

  5. Take a moment to slowly pray through this prayer line by line (and if in a group, do it together!). Pause if you'd like. Add your own words if you like. Or simply pray as is. Either way, remember that the Lord's very Spirit and presence is with you.

  6. Commit to praying this prayer (in secret even!) each day this next week, remembering and enjoying God's presence with you.
