The Sermon on the mount
Week twenty-two: Matthew 7:24-29
reflection and discussion questions:
-
Take a moment in prayer, welcoming the Spirit's presence. Then read Matthew 7:24-29. Did anything in particular stand out as you read or listened to this passage?
-
Phil referenced Jesus' parable in Matthew 21:28-31. Read the parable and consider it's connection to Jesus' final words in His sermon.
-
Why do you think Jesus is so concerned about not only our hearing but also our doing? What difference does it make (Matthew 7:25, 27)?
-
Can you remember a time when you sensed or heard God's voice calling you to something in particular (to forgive, give, be still, or some sort of action, etc) and you obeyed? How did that go, and what was the outcome? Can you remember a time of the opposite, when you did not obey? How did that go?
-
Read again vv 28-29. Why do you think the people were so 'astonished' by Jesus? What astonishes you most about Him?
-
Jesus is to be the Rock upon which we build our lives, and, as we respond to His sermon, it is critical that we remember our total dependance upon Him. How does John 15:4 connect here?
-
Throughout this study we have been regularly asking 2 questions based upon Jesus' words in Matthew 7:24: "Where have I heard from God? Where is He calling me to obedience?" So as we wrap up, what is perhaps 1 or 2 ways you have heard from God in this sermon on the mount, and where is He calling you to obey? How can others around help you in the days ahead?
-
Take some time to pray, offering these things to the Lord, and ask for His power and mercy.
