The Sermon on the mount
Week three: Matthew 5:5
reflection and discussion questions:
-
Review: Where have you seen God move in the last week? What have you been hearing from Him, and where might He be calling you to obedience?
-
Take a moment in prayer, welcoming the Spirit's presence. Then read Matthew 5:2-12 (the Beatitudes).
-
Over the last few weeks, in response to Jesus' sermon on the mount, Phil has asked us two different questions. Read and consider:
-
Where are you from? (As a citizen of the Kingdom of God, how do you live in this world?)
-
Where is your trust? (Where is it really? Do you find yourself leaning on other things or other people than Jesus, almost without realizing it?)
-
-
Read again Matthew 5:5. Based on Phil's message this past Sunday, what do you understand "meekness" to be? What's the difference between weakness and meekness? How does Jesus embody meekness?
-
Read Psalm 37:1-11. What does this passage teach us about fretting, and what does it teach us about genuine meekness?
-
Revisiting our every-week Sermon on the Mount questions (based on Matthew 7:24):
-
What has the Holy Spirit been saying to you this week, particularly about meekness?
-
Where is the Holy Spirit calling you to obedience through this passage (Mt. 5:5)?
-
-
Read Pastor Ralph's "Waybread" blogpost about how to respond to last Sunday's message. Each day this week, practice the exercise he recommends there and be prepared to share your experiences in the days to come!
