the song of songs

Week two: Song of songs 8:6-7
reflection and discussion questions:
  1. Review:  Last week we highlighted how all of God's Word is useful for us in our everyday life (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Therefore, as we continue our survey of God's Word in Song of Songs, how has it been useful and helpful for you so far? Or how has it been perhaps a little challenging?

  2. Take a moment in prayer, welcoming the Spirit's presence. Then, with both our earthly marital relationships, as well as, our heavenly relationship with the Lord in mind, read Song of Songs 8:6-7. What stands out to you and why?

  3. Scholar Miles Van Pelt says that Biblical Wisdom is founded in creation and the created order. Read Genesis 2:24. What does this reveal about God's created order for marriage?

  4. Now read Ephesians 5:31-32 and consider the connection between the two passages. What does this reveal about Jesus' relationship with us?

  5. Van Pelt highlights that the Biblical Wisdom for marriage offered in Song of Songs (as echoed from Genesis) is twofold:

    1. Rock, solid commitment ('hold fast to his wife' (Gen 2); 'set me as a seal upon your heart and arm' (Song 8). How does this impact our view of earthly marriage relationships? How does it impact our view of our relationship with Jesus?

    2. White, hot intimacy. ('they shall become one flesh' (Gen 2); 'its flashes are flashes of fire' (Song 8). How does this impact our view of earthly marriage relationships? How does it impact our view of our relationship with Jesus?

  6. How do both commitment and intimacy working together help our earthly marriages and our relationship with Jesus (Song 8:7)?

  7. Where in your life have you known God's commitment to you? How have you known His intimacy?

  8. Phil mentioned on Sunday that in listening to God's Song, we make room for His Spirit to tune our hearts to Him. Are there areas in your life that seem out of tune? Do you perhaps desire a more committed relationship with either your spouse or Jesus? Or a more intimate, closer one? Whatever it may be, God loves you. And He invites you, in Christ, to come to Him for mercy and help (Hebrews 4:14-16). Take a moment in prayer and bring your cares to the Lord.
