the song of songs

Week three: Song of songs 2:7; 3:5; 8:4
reflection and discussion questions:
  1. Review:  Last week we discussed how areas in our life can often 'get out of tune', and how listening to God's Song can make room for His Spirit to tune our hearts to Him. How have you heard from the Lord so far in this study? How has it been helpful or challenging?

  2. Take a moment in prayer, welcoming the Spirit's presence. Then, with both our earthly relationships, as well as, our heavenly relationship with the Lord in mind, read the warnings of Song of Songs 2:7, 3:5, and 8:4. What stands out to you and why?

  3. In the story of Song of Songs, we read of how the young woman chooses to remain faithful to her true love in the midst of great temptation in Solomon's court. What can be some areas of temptation for us today where we live (pleasure, easiness, comfort, success, possessions, etc)? What can we learn from her example?

  4. Why do you think the young woman repeats these warnings over and over in this Song? In both our earthly relationships and/or our heavenly relationship with the Lord, what can be the dangers to 'awaking love before it pleases'?

  5. Phil talked about asking better questions when it comes to our relationships, focusing on the better versus the lesser.  Instead of asking, "How far is too far?", he mentioned questions like, "How can I honor marriage and the marriage bed (Hebrews 13:4)?" How are these questions different, and how can they focus our attention differently?

  6. On Sunday, Phil said that he thought the word of wisdom from this Song to the Bride of Christ (the church) is to "Remain faithful." Read Revelation 19:6-8. Why is it important for us to keep this future wedding in mind?

  7. Once again, going through this Song can bring to mind areas in our life that have been put out of tune, whether by things we have done or have been done to us. The good news is, "Jesus is a much better Savior that we are sinners" (Rosaria Butterfield), and a He is a much better Healer than our wounds. Read Isaiah 53:4-5 and Colossians 1:19-20. Where do you perhaps need to know more the peace of Jesus' blood? Bring that to the Lord, and receive the grace, mercy, and healing of the blood of His cross.

  8. As a church, we are coming from all sorts of different stages of life, and God's Word is useful to all of us. What is one way God has strengthened your faith and/or your faithfulness through this Wisdom book of Song of Songs? How will it impact your life?
