2 peter

Week four reading: ch 1:10-15
reflection and discussion questions:

Regardless whether you use these questions for group or personal reflection, there's a LOT here, so don't feel any need to cover everything!  Just use the questions below as a guideline for deeper thought and a way to stay present to 2 Peter through the week.

  1. Isaiah 43:19 says, "Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?"  What “new things” do you see God doing at Grace Church lately?  What "new things" is He doing in you?

  2. Do you believe Peter when he says that  in Christ, we already have all we need for life and godliness?  If we already have all we need, what do you think we have to "be all the more diligent" to do?  What are the dangers if we don’t? (see vv. 8-11)

  3. If we shouldn’t aim for the qualities Peter lists in vv. 5-7 ("virtue, knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, godliness, and brotherly affection"), what should we be aiming for?  (Hint: Consider John 15 here.)

  4. Ralph said there are two ways we can "miss the grace of God" (see Heb. 12:15).  One is working so hard at being good people that we forget our goal of union with Christ and abiding in Him, and then letting our goodness flow from that abiding place with Him.  The other was just giving up and resigning ourselves to never changing (remember Phil and his temper from last week!).  Discuss a time when you were tempted to miss the grace of God in one of these two ways.

  5. We  talked a lot on Sunday about “letting” God get at our hearts.  How can you do better at “letting” God have greater access to your heart?  Are there any particular practices you can engage in to help with this?  (If it helps, think of what you need to “do” in order to put yourself in a position to float.)

  6. The writer in Psalm 73 (Asaph) struggles with how hard he's working to live a life that's pleasing to God, but all the while, people who couldn't care less about living for God seem to really be getting ahead–Asaph envies them, but then he catches himself.  Discuss a similar struggle of your own.  What helps Asaph make sense of all this?  Asaph says that he had "almost stumbled" (v. 2).  Discuss how verses 18-26 show that he has "regained his footing."

Next Week's Reading: ch 1:16-21
