2 peter

Week six reading: ch 2:1-10a
reflection and discussion questions:

Regardless whether you use these questions for group or personal reflection, there's a LOT here, so don't feel any need to cover everything!  Just use the questions below as a guideline for deeper thought and a way to stay present to 2 Peter through the week.

  1. On Sunday, Phil described his experience working for a bank and his exposure to both real cash and counterfeit cash. Both were present in his day to day world.  Similarly, in this passage, Peter describes to the church that false teaching will be among them.  Both the real and the counterfeit will be present in their day to day world.  If this is so, how can one tell the difference?

  2. Peter tells of destructive heresies.  Which scholar Michael Green says are "opinions destructive of true faith." Phil mentioned a few opinions he thinks could be impacting the wider church these days. (The prosperity gospel, the "self-made" gospel, etc.) Which one struck you most?  Do any others come to mind?  If so, what and why does it seem dangerous?

  3. Peter mentions that many will follow false teachers. What makes you/us vulnerable to being led astray?

  4. How can we avoid this?  Read again Peter's words in ch 1:8-11.  What do these verses tell us are the advantages of practicing to grow in our knowledge of Jesus?  What is the fruit of abiding in Him?

  5. What are we in danger of if we don't?  What about Jesus, ourselves, or the world do we become "blind" to, and how does this make us more vulnerable to accepting a counterfeit gospel?

  6. As Pastor Ralph has said before, "God has a track record."  What are some takeaways for you from God's "track record" that Peter describes in vv 4-10?  How is God calling you/us to respond?

  7. Read Psalm 37.  (All of it if possible, but especially vv1-11.)  How does the promise in v 11 that "the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace" connect to these words in 2 Peter?

Next Week's Reading: ch 2:10b -22

Does anything stand out to you?  If so, circle or underline it.  Write down any thoughts or questions that come to mind.

We'd love to hear from you!
