Week seven reading: ch 2:10b-22
reflection and discussion questions:

Regardless whether you use these questions for group or personal reflection, there's a LOT here, so don't feel any need to cover everything!  Just use the questions below as a guideline for deeper thought and a way to stay present to 2 Peter through the week.

  1. For the past several paragraphs (all of chapter 2), Peter has written in great detail about false teachers, especially their character, message, and future.  Why do you think this matters so much for Peter to discuss with the church?  What is at risk for the church if he doesn't?

  2. Two different times in this passage, (v14; v18) Peter says of the false teachers, "they entice..." In the original language this was a fishing term, meaning to "bait and catch." They are trying to lure in God's people.  How does Peter say that they are doing this? (See 2:2 and 2:18) How do we see false teachers enticing God's people today?

  3. There are two specific groups within the church that Peter mentions that are especially vulnerable to this: newer followers of Jesus (v 18) and unsteady souls (v14).  Consider a time when you found yourself in one of these groups.  How did God protect and strengthen your faith in those times?

  4. What are the things that cause your soul to seem un-steady?  How does your relationship with Jesus bring it steady?

  5. Often in times of unsteadiness or, as Phil described on Sunday, in times of "hunger", we can be enticed to "fill up" on things that are not good for us.  Things that, in the end, do not satisfy or bring freedom, but only bring enslavement (v19). What are those things for you?  What is God calling you to in response?

  6. In regards to these things, Phil encouraged us on Sunday to "spit the hook." To confess them to the Lord, receive the forgiveness of God in the all-sufficient blood of Jesus, and ask His Spirit for the strength to walk anew in His transforming power.  What does this look like for you?  Who can you talk to for further help and support?

  7. Read the words of Jesus in John 6:35-40. How does this comfort you? How can you/we more diligently practice "feeding" on Jesus?  How would this impact our lives?

Next Week's Reading: ch 3:1-9

Does anything stand out to you?  If so, circle or underline it.  Write down any thoughts or questions that come to mind.
